A “jibarito” is a sandwich unique to Chicago. It popped up in the mid 90’s at a Puerto Rican restaurant in Humboldt Park. The jibarito, is made with flattened, fried green plantains instead of bread, coated with a garlic paste, mayonnaise, and a filling that usually consisits of meat, American yellow cheese, lettuce and tomato. The original jibarito had a steak filling, but has also featured chicken, pork & a vegetarian option.
We honor this unique creation while Chicago’s Puerto Rican community celebrates their heritage.
